It's been a difficult couple of years for everyone, and we are no exception. But like Robert Frost, we've learned one thing about life in all our travels and challenges - it goes on. So here we are, moving forward in 2022.

In late 2019, the acoustic duo known as Bliss Point had a couple of realizations - we wanted to delve into writing our own music, we wanted to expand our band, and we wanted to change our name (primarily because there was another Bliss Point rocking out a few states away).

Choosing a New Band Name:

The most important thing was to choose a name that wasn't already being used by another band - better yet, a name that no one was using for anything!

Here’s how we did it:

  1. We made a list of words, phrases, and ideas that we felt represented us as musicians and people.

  2. We wandered the library noting interesting book titles, author names, and other words we encountered that we liked.

  3. We ultimately made a list of a couple hundred words, phrases, possible band names, book titles, etc...

  4. We whittled that list down to a handful of contenders (especially removing those that were hard to spell or say out loud or could make an awkward URL or social @).

  5. The next step was critically important, because as we said above, the most important thing in choosing this band name was that we wanted a unique name that no one else was using! So we researched each of our contender band names - we started by Googling, then checked socials and Spotify and YouTube to see if anyone else was using our potential name. This allowed us to eliminate about half of the options either because they were already being used by another band OR because they were identified with an existing brand name that had a significant web presence.

  6. This left us with just a few names, and thus Roots Run Wild was chosen!

We were drawn to the word Roots from the beginning of our search - it captures the spirit of many of our closest held musical influences, but it also conjures the idea of nature, plants, growth (especially that which is unseen and happens beneath the surface), the sustaining structure of all that is. We also love that when said aloud, the word could be Routes rather than Roots - an homage to the long winding journey that brought each of us to the place we currently are and to each other. Run Wild came naturally as an extension of that idea - our paths started off wildly different, yet we found each other.

Not-So-Pro-Tip: Don't throw out that list of ideas that didn't get used as your new band name - we kept that list and refer back to it all the time for new song ideas and lyric prompts!
